Altius Brass

Calgary’s premiere large brass ensemble

Altius Brass represents a unique collaboration of professional performers on brass and percussion instruments. Based in Calgary, Alberta, this eighteen-member ensemble under the musical direction of Mark Lennon, brings together musicians with a stimulating mixture of backgrounds, including professional orchestral performers from the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, some of Calgary’s finest freelance performers, and instructors from Calgary’s public and separate school boards. All of these performers are united in their goal of exploring and expanding the musical repertoire for large brass ensemble, while continuing to increase the audience for such music.

Altius Brass performs an impressive variety of repertoire. The size of the ensemble makes it a unique performing ensemble in Calgary and surrounding areas, and an important member of the Alberta music community. Altius Brass seeks to encourage the development and exposure of large brass ensemble music to the community at large through the performance of works spanning from the renaissance (such as performances of Giovanni Gabrieli’s magnificent double and triple choir canzonas), the Baroque (such as Bach’s Toccata and Fugue), to modern Canadian works (such as Keon Birney’s “Toboggan Ride”).

Join us for this very special concert, as Altius Brass and friends form a large traditional brass band! Guest conductor William Martin, Musical Director of the Saskatoon Brass Band, has picked a wide range of repertoire to really show off what a brass band can do. Curious what an E-flat horn sounds like? Or how a baritone compares to a euphonium? Come and see!
